Introducing Tux

Apr 06

Just when you thought it was safe to go out: Along comes Tux.

I really haven’t seen much on Linux in any of the design circles. Eventually, I believe, Linux will become a major player in the OS circut. Some questions for you (no reply needed). Do you test on Linux? Have you ever wanted a full free web-server on your laptop, including cgi, ssi, php, python, perl, etc.

I do almost all of my backend development on a Sony with Debian and KDE. I completely removed Windows, if you haven’t I suggest you try.

Ingrediants for a successful Linux meal:

1 old computer (memory and speed don’t make much of a difference)
1 copy of Knoppix distro recorded on a normal cd as an ISO image
1 One old compI suggest taking an old notebook getting the Knoppix live distrobution including Debian (make sure you are hooked to the Internet) and it will walk you right through the process, detecting everything in your computer and downloading what it needs.

Then get a good package intaller and browse thousands of free quality software packages and watch as Debian detects everything that you need to make sure that your computer is as stable as possible. Need a Sony to sleep it’s as easy as apm –suspend, or write your own script for the sleep button.

Another benefit of Linux is as you use it teaches you to be a better computer user. For example, with Linux you are told time and again to never ever run directly as Root. In windows almost everyone is logged in with admin privileges, as you use Linux you will see Windows & Mac in a whole new light, especially for customizations with shell scripts, like batch on steriods.
